Arm lift

Restores arm contour by removing excess skin.

Duration

2-3 hours

Anesthesia

General or regional anesthesia with sedation

Recovery

1-2 weeks

Overview

An arm lift (brachioplasty) removes excess skin from the inner arm to restore a firmer, more defined contour. Dr. Hermes recommends it when laxity does not improve with exercise, often after significant weight loss. The goal is an arm that looks more toned and natural.

Dr. Hermes's approach

Dr. Hermes makes an incision on the inner arm, of variable length depending on how much skin needs removal, positioned to be as discreet as possible. When localized fat is present, it can be combined with liposculpture to refine the contour. His humanistic, safety-first approach guides layered closure and scar care during follow-up.

Risks and honesty

Risks include a visible scar (inherent to this procedure), wound-healing issues, seroma, infection, temporary or permanent sensation changes, and minor asymmetry. Scar quality varies with each person's skin. Dr. Hermes minimizes risks with careful technique and follow-up, but no procedure is risk-free and results vary.

Are you a good candidate?

Ideal candidates have skin laxity on the inner arms, often after weight loss or due to aging, that does not improve with physical activity. A stable weight, good health, and accepting that the procedure leaves a scar in exchange for the contour change are important. Realistic expectations are key.

Recovery, step by step

  1. 01

    First 3-5 days

Swelling and bruising in the arms, a feeling of tightness when moving them. Use of an arm compression garment and relative rest, keeping the arms elevated. Heavy lifting is avoided. Medication manages discomfort.

  2. 02

    Week 1-2

Swelling begins to subside. Many patients resume light tasks while avoiding strain on the arms. The compression garment continues as directed. Visible sutures, if any, are usually removed in this stage.

  3. 03

    Week 3-6

Noticeable improvement in swelling and arm contour. Gradual return to light physical activity as directed, avoiding intense arm exercises. The compression garment continues. The scar is maturing.

  4. 04

    Month 3-12

The arm contour looks firmer as residual swelling resolves. Return to full exercise once cleared. The scar lightens and fades gradually over 12-18 months. Scar care supports its evolution.

Frequently asked

An arm lift leaves a scar on the inner arm, positioned to be as discreet as possible. It is permanent but tends to lighten and fade with time and care. Dr. Hermes will explain how to care for it and what to expect honestly.

If the main issue is localized fat and the skin has good elasticity, liposculpture alone is sometimes enough and avoids a long scar. But if there is significant laxity, removing skin is usually necessary for a good contour. Dr. Hermes will guide you after examining you.

During the first weeks it is best to avoid lifting weight and straining the arms to protect healing. Returning to arm exercise is gradual and cleared according to your recovery. Every recovery is different and timelines vary.
